Almost nobody actually replaces a motherboard. The cost is generally not worth it and I just wanted you to see that. Good luck.

HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl1XX. is the name of the series, XX can be from 00aa to 99zz.  Please use the following way to find out the model/product of your machine

You're very welcome.

Glad the memory upgrade has improved your notebook's performance.

Wait until you get that SSD installed!

What should I upgrade?

This is probably a stupid question for people of this level of expertise, but I don't know much about this and haven't found answers anywhere

I have a 9-year-old laptop that's running really slowly and hangs a lot when trying to do fairly simple things, like have a few tabs open or use Microsoft Word and OneNote at the same time, scrolling web pages goes really slowly and sticks a lot, it takes forever for Netflix videos to start, so I'm wondering where would my money best be spent on upgrading it?  RAM?  SSD drive?  Fresh install of Windows?  Something else?

The first thing I was thinking of doing is increasing the RAM to 16GB for around $70. Would I see a big difference in performance just from this?

Here's what I have:

HP Envy dv6-7245us

AMD A10-4600M processor benchmark single thread rating 1065 (they say over 1000 is good)

6GB DDR3 RAM 1600 MHz

640GB HDD (400GB free)

integrated GPU AMD Radeon HD 7660G VRAM = 512MB benchmark 474 (they say it should be over 750)

Internet speed is usually around 30 mpbs (the plan I pay for says "up to" 150 mbps)

No VPN

All Windows Updates and drivers etc. are up-to-date

I appreciate any advice

Thank you,

Greg

SATA Version Issue

Re: What should I upgrade?

I also have an older DV6 laptop -- and the best upgrade I did was to replace the HDD with an SSD.  That breathed new life into the laptop and made it a lot snappier.  Mine had a 500GB HDD, so if yours has the same, you're looking at around $50 USD to replace that with a SATA SSD.

Do NOT do a fresh install of Windows -- that will only make matters worse!

As to memory, anything beyond 4GB is not going to get you any noticeable performance gain.  You'll be spending a lot of money for very little in return.

When you have the SSD, read this info about CLONING your current drive to it:

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR) from here: https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree
2) Connect the new drive to the PC using a USB-to-SSD drive adapter (like the one illustrated below)
3) Follow the instructions in this link: http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/Cloning+a+disk
4) Shutdown the PC when done
5) Swap the drives and reboot the PC.

NOTE: To do this easily, the SDD has to be the same capacity as the HDD.  IF you get an SDD that is a lot smaller, then before you do the cloning, you have to shrink the largest partition on the HDD (usually the OS partition), to the size such that it, and the other partitions, fit easily on the SSD.

You should boot from the new drive without any problems.

Telling us only that you're having issues is not telling us anything useful.

Do you even know that the laptop can take an NVMe SSD?

What are you doing and what is happening that causes you to believe there are issues?

We can proceed when you provide the information.
Thanks

I'm not aware that HP sells keysets for that PC and if you simply replace the current keyboard with a Japanese keyboard, that can cause serious issues.

Re: Internet button prompts the keyboard to misbehave, how do I disable it

First off, that is not the Internet Button; instead, it is a button that when pressed, launces the Browser you have set up in Program Default in Settings. So it is a Browser button.

Second, you said you Replaced the keyboard, but based on your description, it sounds like what you did was plug in an external keyboard -- which would not fix the problem.

My guess is that you have pressed this button A LOT!  And as a result, it is now shorting on a frequent basis and acting as if you are pressing it, when you are not.  The only "fix" for this, since you can not actually disable the built-in keyboard, would be to have it replaced.

Hi I am old HP L2445w monitor that I am trying to connect to a new laptop (ACER Swift) but despite having the right connection, it says to check the video cable. I guess it needs a driver but can't find one. I heard there may be a workaround? Does anyone have any ideas?

Update:

After some time, it stopped working again; it's inconsistent. It seems to work for about five minutes after I boot it up and then it stops working again. I keep having to do a hardware reset and/or go into that recovery mode. Any suggestions on how to make it stay? It seems that this is a software issue as when it does work, it works great.

Is it possible to add memory to this laptop?  I need to load additional softwares for engineering and I may need additional memory to load/operate the program on my laptop.  I already put solid works on the laptop and now I want to put Matlab.
