HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-ch0xx came w/ 2666 MEMORY (rumor: b/c no XMP it only read 2400?!!!)

--

Translation: i'm looking to upgrade my 8gb installed memory to 32, and my laptop CAME WITH 2666 memory, but i'm getting responces from my inquiries as to which make/model is the best bang for its buck, that my new 2-in-1 has a problem at the BIO level and actually can NOT run full 2666 or anything higher, and despite what's physically installed, it can only read/run/use 2400! I want to disbelieve the answers i've gotten, however they say it's b/c the BIOS has no XMP...

...so...is this true? just buy the lowest latency 2400? what about the laptop actually being shipped out of HP with 2666?!

Streaks on Laptop Screen

Hello,

My Laptop is not yet a month old, and on the last use - I noticed streaks on the screen. I took it back to the dealership who basically told me its my fault. I know this isnt true because I did not need to clean the laptop as it is still new. This is my second HP laptop and again I have issues with HP. This is really unfair because I paid a lot of money for a device that has streaks running down it

Replacing Hard Disk with and SSD and use HP Recovery Media

I have an HP Pavillion 15-p258nl, which came with a pre-installed version of Windows.
Actually, i have Debian on my laptop, and during the installation of this Os i unfortunately deleted the windows
firmware. So i bought the HP Recovery Media so as to have the possibility to reinstall windows, even though I haven't done it yet.

If i buy an ssd and i replace with it the hard disk of my hp notebook, can I at this point use the HP Recovery Disk and start with a new fresh install of Windows ?

ps: with a budget of $140, which 1Tera SSD do you suggest to me ?

Hi,

I believe the parts will work from bothe laptops. They have the same service manual, so fans, speakers and wifi card will work.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03694820

You can most likely can also replace the whole motherboard with heatsink assembly. The service manual mentions that some of the top covers are only for Intel, so you might need to use the other top cover too.

If you want to buy some new parts such as for example the fan, you can find the part number in the service manual and perform an online search. Fan  686901-001

Hope it helps,

David

"As you can see, the ram is capable of 2666 but the laptop will only run it at 2400 so buying ram with higher JEDEC frequency or XMP frequency won't help at all. For overclocking the CPU, use throttlestop. Use the "disable and lock turbo power limits" option and increase the turbo ration limits. The OC limit is 0.6 GHz. Even at stock frequency, the laptop's cooling system is not powerful enough to take away the heat so to get better performance, you need to repaste and add thermal pads."

Hi,

Your PC supports max 16GB of DDR3L 1600MHz RAM (2x8GB)

That is what the PC came with, so no further upgrade possible.

How to upgrade my 256GB of SSD to 512GB or 1TB of SSD without reinstalling everything?

I am currently using HP Envy x360 13" Ryzen 7  with 256GB of SSD. However, I found that the capacity might be not enough in the near future and want to upgrade it to higher capacity such as 512GB or 1TB of SSD.

Is there any way to upgrade it without reinstalling everything for the new SSD?

Looking forward to your help and advice.

Hi David,

Thanks for taking the time to look at my problem.

I did both actions as dexcribed by you and the result is no issue with the battery or with the tool it says either the battery is full or it needs to be changed if I cannot run it without it.

I guess my battery is dead.

Thanks

Gilbert

Re: Replacing Hard Disk with and SSD and use HP Recovery Media

Hi,

Your notebook came with Windows 8.1 (so recovery disks are probably for 8.1), did you ever upgrade to Windows 10 before deleting the partition?

In any case, you should probably install Windows 10 64-bit (you can get a digital licence online on Amazon or so for very little).

Here is the drive I recommend since it probably has the best performance:

https://www.amazon.it/Samsung-MZ-76E1T0B-Unit%C3%A0-Interna-Grigio/dp/B078WST5RK/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=2.5%22+ssd+1tb&qid=1556872852&s=gateway&sr=8-1

On page 69 of the service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04511833

The Win 8 product key for your machine is in the firmware of the notebook. So you could even perform a clean install of the latest version. Take a look here at how to do this.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Hard-disk-problem/m-p/6908604#M547102

To install Windows 10 you can buy product key (or if you have any old notebooks with win7 product key, you can also use that to activate)

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition.

https://www.microsoft.com/it-it/software-download/windows10

Replace the drive.

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing the HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on the HP support page for your product.

Re: Does HP 15-cx0056wm have M.2 PCIe slot for SSD / Intel Optane?

CX0056WM comes with 1 m.2 slot for either nvme m.2 ssd or optane memory but not both. I installed an adata xpg sx8200 pro 1tb nvme drive and left the stock hdd in as secondary drive. Also installed Ballistix LT 32GB DDR4 2666 MHz SODIMM Memory Kit (2 x 16GB) even though after purchase I believe you can also use the DDR4 2400 Mhz version as well if its cheaper. Installation was really easy. Good luck.

You're welcome Gilbert.

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c04700771

Try also performing various system tests using HP diagnostics

Do the tests give further info on charge hold capacity?

The part number for the battery is quite expensive. Part number: 760605-005

Hp parts store Italy

https://parts.hp.com/hpparts/Search_Results.aspx?mscssid=5510711B72D74692AAEB6A20832BF5FD&SearchIn=PartNumber&SearchPN=760605-005

On page 56 of service manual you can see the steps to replace the battery

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04582530

I usually replace the batteries in my laptops about every 18-24 months.

Hi,

It sounds normal. Some drives will chirp more than others.

You can always perform a diagnostics check:

https://support.hp.com/lt-en/document/c03467259

You should also consider replacing the hard drive with a 2.5" SSD for a great performance boost in everyday use.

Hope it helps,

David

Hi A4Apollo,

I tried the steps mentioned by you (driver update). I faced the issue again today even after driver update and then updated BIOS. I also checked through HP Troubleshoot tool and the results show Passed.

I noted that I cannot access ClickPad settings in my laptop even after Driver & BIOS update. Can you please suggest how to get those settings?

Another thing, I was able to take Snapshot of TaskMgr last time the issue happened (snapshot attached).

Please note that I bought the Laptop from BestBuy in US but am currently on travel to India for next 4 months. Is HP warranty covered in India as well?
