Hi,

There is more than one choice.

You can replace the 2.5" hard drive in your notebook with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD such as the 2.5" Samsung 860 Evo or similar. On page 41 of the service manual, you can see the steps to replace the drive.

However, you could keep the hard drive in the notebook and use for storage and insert an M2 SSD. Your PC supports both SATA3 and much faster PCIe NVMe SSD. Before buying drive you should take a quick look inside the PC and check if the M2 slot is present on the motherboard. On page 35 of the service manual, you can see how to remove the bottom cover to take a look.

m2 15cb500.PNGM2 slotThe slot should be there, but it is a good idea to check as sometimes notebooks that did not come with M2 SSD are missing physical slot on the motherboard.

If the slot is present you can use either an M2 SATA3 SSD such as the M2 Samsung 860 Evo or similar or much faster M2 PCIe NVMe SSD such as the Samsung PM961 or similar. On page 43 of the service manual, you can see the steps to install the drive.

I don't know why you need docking statiion to connect ethernet, printer and wireless keyboard. Anyway, your Spectre is a second generation Spectres therefore no USB-C port. It does not have docking port therefore you can only use USB 3.0 docks.

Firstly you CAN'T charge your machine using USB 3.0 dock, full stop. Secondary all USB 3,0 docks support external monitor BUT if you wish to connect more than one external monitor you need a dock which has DisplayLink certified sticker such as

     https://www.displaylink.com/newsroom/press-releases/displaylink-enables-latest-hp-usb-30-dual-head-graphics-adapters-96

The above dock has enough USB port for you to plug other devices.

Hi,

Your PC will actually support 16GB of DDR4 2133Mhz RAM (2x8GB) even if 8GB is mentioned in the service manual. You can buy from your preferred brand such as Crucial, Samsung...

On page 42 of the service manual you can see the steps to upgrade RAM:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06198371

Your PC should have an M2 slot. It is a good idea to check before buying drive as sometimes notebooks that did not come with the M2 drive are missing physical slot on the motherboard.

On page 35 of the service manual, you can see how to remove bottom cover to take a look.

m2 ssd bc400.PNGM2 slotIf the slot is present you can install an M2 SATA3 SSD such as the M2 Samsung 860 Evo or similar. You can get of your desired capacity. You will need to install the OS on the SSD for performance gain.

Hope it helps,

David

Re: HP Pavilion Power 15 SSD upgrade

Hi, just for some clarification, I do not need to remove my current hard drive if i want to upgrade it to SSD. Instead, i can buy an M2 SSD and insert it at the slot on the motherboard if the slot is present. Is that right?  So basically my laptop will contain 2 types of storage right after the upgrade right?

Another question,

If i were to use my laptop just for casual work and some gaming, an M2 SATA3 SSD should suffice right? (Yes i am aware that a PCIe NWME SSD is much faster)  Are there any specifcations of the SSD I should be aware of if I want to insert an M2 SSD to my motherboard instead of replacing my current hard drive?

Hi,

You need to update the BIOS. You most likely have an AMD CPU and it needs BIOS update before it can update Windows 10. Please provide the model or product number. There are many different ways to find it. Here is link to HP support page showing you how:

You are correct. You can have both drives at the same time. You can use the mechanical hard drive for storage and the SSD for OS and apps. You will need to transfer the OS to the SSD.

Yes. A SATA3 SSD will already give a considerable boost to the PC. I would choose the M2 860 Evo as it is considered the best price/performance M2 SATA3 SSD.

Example:

Hi - Thanks for your response.

The docking station wasn't just to connect ethernet, printer and wireless keyboard.  It was meant to go the whole hog and do those as well as connect to a display monitor and be able to charge my laptop.  And in any case, it is slightly better, as I only have to unplug 1 cable from the docking station instead of (3 - ethernet, printer, keyboard) cables.

I only need to connect 1 external monitor (so thanks for the link, but it's not required). However, it seems that without a USB-C Display Port capability, I have no choice but to connect the HDMI from the display monitor to the Laptop.

So, unless I upgrade my laptop, it seems the docking station hasn't been as great as could be, but at least I go from 6 cables in my laptop down to 3! half way there.

Hi,

There is no M2 slot as stated above. However, you can replace the 2.5" hard drive with a 2.5" SSD such as the Samsung 860 Evo or similar. This will give a great boost to the PC. On page 37 of the service manual, you can see the steps to replace the drive.

You should also upgrade the RAM if you have not already done so since your PC came with only 2GB of RAM. Your PC supports max 16GB of DDR3L 1600Mhz RAM (2x8GB). I would upgrade to at least 4GB and even better 8GB. On page 43 of the service manual, you can see the steps to upgrade RAM.

Quick question,

What if i were to install an intel optane memory 32gb? Any thoughts on that? And between the M2 SATA 3 SSD and the optane memory which one would you pick?

Re: Ram slots

Hi,

Your notebook has two slots as stated by  and will support max 32GB of DDR4 2400Mhz RAM (2x16GB)  even if 16GB is mentioned in service manual.

At the moment you have one 4GB stick and one empty slot. So you could add another 4GB stick in the empty slot which should give a performance boost. You can purchase from your preferred brand such as Crucial, Samsung...

On page 40 of service manual you can see the steps to upgrade RAM:

Hope it helps,

David

Personally i would pick the SATA3 SSD. I try to get away from depending on mechanical drives in my notebooks. I believe that Optane could be something great for the future when they become complete drives and not just caching systems in notebooks.
