Burning smell from Laptop portals

Recently I have been noticing a burning type of smell from the USB, charger and other portals on the laptop. My laptop is working fine and I don't think that the charger is the problem. The fan is right by my portals so the smell could be from there too. Should I go and get this laptop checked out by a technician or is this just normal?

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Yes HP legally should not deny warranty coverage just because the laptop has been opened. But we know they sometimes do. I personally am a "fixer" (google "fixer movement") and I advocate the end user's right to upgrade, and repair his or her own property. However, use your common sense. There is a difference between upgrading which HP will not do for you, and trying to poke under the hood just to confirm an obvious problem. If you are under warranty and the laptop is exhibiting obvious signs of a specific problem like a fan issue, send it in and let HP make the diagnosis. What if you figure out by openinng it the fan is bad? Are you going to pay for a new one? No you want HP to fix it free. Send it in.

Hello I have gone through those steps several times and did them all and still no luck.  There is absolutely no webcam driver on my computer and I can't find anywhere on where to install it.. Not even in the recovery manager.  This computer is brand new and I don't want to send it back because I already had to send another one back... this is the only issue I have with it and it's a pretty big issue because I make Youtube videos.

Updating BIOS on a "2pe35ua#aba" laptop. Saving license location (to save onto USB) not there?

I am trying to update the BIOS on a computer that does not have an OS installed on the SSD.(hard drive)
I'm following this document (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00042629) but when I get to the Step 6 (Of Step 2) "In the License to Save Files window, click Change, select the USB flash drive, click OK, and then click Next. The HP System BIOS Update Utility opens.", the option to change the location and that entire page is not there.
It goes from accepting the terms of agreement straight into an installation into a default location.

basic run down  bios up to date, drivers up to date, clearence, 20 days old, ( even used 2 fans  under the base using  a laptop fan)

when i boot my computer it instantly overheats and fan noise is immence. ill open up task manager, the cpu hits a max of 10% usage, gpu 1-5%  but yet its still hot. with 2 tabs open for school work such as google docs and a website for information it seems to gain heat consistently and in a quite room with the fan hitting almost its max noise is embrassing..

when im at home and charger is plugged in, maybe youtube at 144p playing music and a web brower gaming such as cookie clicker the laptop over heats to 60+ degrees (when i look at it, using nzxts cam) this is with using the fans pumping cool air into the laptop.

battery: so student work meaning using google docs, word, website browing and the occassional video or 2.  on 0% brightness battery saver on,  radeon display settings at its lowest.  im getting 3-5hours of use and maybe  6 if im lucky.  when on the website it tells me up to 11hours.

i understand this is a new laptop and ryzen Apus in ultrabooks is something that is still upcoming. I just hope these issues can be fixed and optiomised better in the near future. other then those issues i aposluitly love this laptop and think you all are doing an excellent job.  will purchase another HP Laptop in the future, whenever this one kicks the bucket. thank you lachlan

Touchpad overheated and created a bulge

Hello

My laptop was working fine until the touchpad completely stopped working and overheated to the point it created a small bulge on the actual touchpad. No other part of the laptop overheated, ONLY the touchpad.

I’ve checked out the laptop for a minute about a day after it happened and it works fine, even in the bulge part. However it does make me worried to use it.

Any information is welcomed, thanks!

Need a new HD; should I put in SSD 2.5" or M.2 or both?

$

After a Windows update fried my standard HD; I was told I should upgrade to a SSD. This laptop can support a 2.5" drive and M.2 drive.  Could /should I use both? Is that somehow better? Or, is the M.2 best used when using a standard HD with it?

Mainly, I want to avoid the problem of the HD overheating when updating, and I would like the laptop to run faster. So what is your best recommendation?

Network issue with HP USB-C Universal Dock

I am using an HP USB-C Universal Dock with an Elitebook 840 G3. After figuring out that this laptop does not support charging through the USB-C port :( , I switched to using the supplied USB-C to 4.5mm/USB-3 adaptor. This seemed to work great until the user rebooted the laptop. After restarting, the dock ethernet port was not recognised.

I was able to get it working again by reinstalling ethernet drivers but have the same issue every time it is rebooted.

I have tried installing drivers that came loaded on the dock flash memory, as well as having Windows find the drivers.

This issue only happens when connecting the dock with the USB-3 adaptor. If I plug the USB-C cable directly into the laptop, then the ethernet is fine - just it will not charge.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your answer. That's what I thought about the disk speed.

I already ran the BIOS test, and they showed no problem. Today I'll run the tests again when I get back home and compare the speed test results with my EliteBook 820 G3. Mine is an i5, but disk speed shouldn't be very different. I'll come back with the results.

Thanks again.

My friend David, it didn't work. My ethernet adapter has the magic packet and is activated. My wireless ,not .Neither there is a wol option in BIOS.
Seems that is the problem. Weird, it is a relatively new laptop.

Hi,

Now the law cited by  I believe is for the USA and since this is global english forum I guess it does not make much sense to discuss or view laws that will not apply on a global market.

In my answer I adviced to contact HP support directly and get fixed under warranty. However, if the User did still want to take a look, I thought the best idea would be to provide at least the service manual. This is why the comment from  "jump right in" is out of place. If my intention was to advice the user to fix the fan I surely would have provided more detail, steps, part number...   to replace it.

Now if the advice was not obvious in my reply to get fixed under warranty I believe it is a good idea for omeone to intervene and make it more obvious. Quoting the title of a service manual when we know they are intented for service providers in a single case (and some others) I do not agree with when we provide these service manual to thousands of Members of the Forum.

Having said the above, what would I do personally? Well I become really attached to my personal computers, especially the one I carry around with me. So in the above scenario where I am quite sure it is the fan, I would probably first check and see how long the service centre would keep the PC for. If it is longer than lets say a few days, I would probably proceed and replace the fan myself. I would do this for many parts of the PC depending on the time the service centre would keep the PC for. This is my personal view and I would not advice another Member to fix it unless out of warranty.

At least I hope  received his solution.

All the best,

David

When updating my BIOS I don't ever remember seeing that License to Save files window. It extracted to default location of C:\SoftwareSetup\Spxxxx. It then launched from that location and I was given option of flashing BIOS or create the USB Recovery.
