Hello ,

Whenever the Hard Disk Short/Long DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue

HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby

Please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media)

Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. You can also refer to the below shown link for further support

Thank you for the update,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

The Screenshot or a picture of either the message or the secondary battery in your possession should help our cause,

As I don't seem to find any details regarding a secondary battery on your particular computer.

That said, Sometimes Windows does not detect the presence of a battery. This can occur even if your battery is working properly. To resolve this issue on your own, try the following possible solutions.

After each of these steps. This can be done while the AC power is connected or when the notebook is running on battery-only power.

  1. Perform a hard reset.
  2. Reset the BIOS defaults.
  3. Update the BIOS.
  4. Determine if the notebook starts using battery only.

Greetings

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are unable to boot when then the cloned drive is installed on the HDD slot.

Would like to provide my suggestion.

Personally, I would not recommend you to clone the hard drive, instead, do a clean install of the operating system using the recovery kit on the computer.

Please try to perform a BIOS default.

Change the boot priority in BIOS and check.

As the SSD is detected in the DVD slot. Please open disk management by doing a right-click on the Windows button.

Format the SSD in NTFS and check.

Please refer to this HP Article for assistance in using disk management.

Hope this helps.

If the information I've provided was helpful,

Good Luck.

Adding parallel SSD?, how do I configure it?

I have a HP ZBook 15u G3 Mobile Workstation which apparently has a 2.5" HDD slot and an M2 slot.

At present I have a 1TB HDD, can I add a 1TB SSD in parallel in the M2 slot?

How do I make use of the SSD's additional speed in that situation? Do I for instance move the current C: drive to the SSD and make the HDD accessible as plain storage? How do I accomplish this change in disk utilisation?

Laptop does not recognize power cord/adapter

Laptop is approximately 15 months old. In the past few weeks it has had a problem charging the battery.

When the power charger is plugged in the icon in the bottom right of the GUI does not show the power cord symbol and the battery discharges in a normal manner as the laptop is used.

I have taken the following steps.

1. Run the HP battery diagnostic. Test indicates "battery is good but full diagnostic not possible because power cord not plugged in." The power cord is plugged in during the test.

2. A replacement power cord was purchased. Does not solve problem.

3. Opened the Device Manager, selected, Batteries, and uninstalled and reinstalled "Microsoft ACPI - Comliant ........

I have observed that when I power the laptop off and plug in the power cord, when I return to the laptop it is fully charged.

This makes me think the problem is software related.

Any help would be appreciated.

You might want to take a look at this document: Battery Does not Power Notebook or Hold a Charge.

It suggests troubleshooting steps to determine if the problem is the battery, the power supply, or the system board.

You might find the answer to your battery/power issue as you work through the steps in that HP support article.

All good questions and you have astutely figured out the issues. Yes you can install an M.2 mSSD and make that the boot disk. The best way to do this is to "clone" the existing Windows install over to the new M.2 disk then rearrange the boot order so the system boots from the M.2 then format the original drive. To do this, you need an M.2 large enough that it can hold the data on the old drive. You have asked about a 1 TB M.2 and cloning a 1 TB HDD to a 1 TB M.2 disk should be easy. I use a program called Acronis True Image but several experts here swear by a cloning program called Macrium Reflect. Apparently they allow full use of the trial version to clone a drive:

https://www.macrium.com/download/home

You would make a bootdisk from the cloning software, boot the system from the bootdisk and activate the clone function to copy the HDD to the M.2.

Post back as I am sure there will be questions. We need to figure out what kind of M.2 disk you can get (SATA or NVME/PCIe) and get you some installation instructions and see if you feel comfortable with the hardware part of it.

If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Upgrading to SSD

I need to upgrade my hard drive to ssd. I do a ton of video editing and with the help of Geek Squad and other so-called tech support I purchased the Samsung 960 pro 1tb. I was assured by four "experts" who were looking at my specifications that this was entirely possible by only sacrificing a sata slot. I took the laptop in for install to be told what I bought is not compatible. I'm not sure what to do or where to go from here as the same person gave me specs for a product that doesn't seem to exist. Can anyone help?

Not software probably. It is likely the charger jack module. Or, unfortunately it could be the motherboard. The motherboard is not sensing that the power cord is plugged in and electricity is streaming to the battery. That sensing comes from one of the leads from the power jack module and it can be damaged or the sensor on the motherboard can be damaged. If you are having trouble accepting this one way to be sure is to wipe and reload Windows or you can even boot the system from a Linux Live thumb drive without making any changes to the software on the hard drive. This will give a fresh look from different software and if the presence of the power cord is still not detected, logically it has to be hardware.

Thanks for your response, that's very helpful.

Looking at the machine spec. at;

http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=8693764#!tab=specs

it suggests the M2 slot will support 128GB M.2 SATA SSD or 256GB M.2 SATA SED SSD.

I looked at the options here;

http://www.drivesolutions.com/cgi/shop/ug2store.cgi?command=listitems&kind=hpl&pos=0&type=itemid&itemid=hpl27891

and also here;

http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for//hp-zbook-15u-g3-mobile-workstation

The first suggests I can run with a 1 TB M.2 NGFF (SSD) Solid State Drive Module, the second a Crucial MX200 500GB M.2 Type 2280 (Single Sided) Internal SSD which seems at odds with the spec.

While searching I also came across a forum entry where this was discussed and there seemed to be some issues doing this for the 15 model;

So now... I'm thinking I should perhaps just swop the 1TB HDD with an equivalent 1TB SSD. For example, the 1TB 7mm SATA III MLC (SSD) Solid State Drive or the Crucial MX300 1TB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD.

HP Omen M.2 SSD upgrade

Hello,

I'm planning to upgrade my HP Omen 15-5206tx laptop's 256gb m.2 SSD to a Samsung 960 evo 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD and am wondering if its compatible, if not what other M.2 SSD’s would be compatible with this laptop?

There isn't much useful information on M.2 SSD upgrades for this laptop and I'm in need of a storage upgrade. I'm not sure if information about my laptop and stock SSD will help any, but here,

Laptop information:

Laptop name: HP Omen 15-5206tx

Product Number: P7F33PA#ABG

SSD information:

Part Number: 788612-001

SSD Name: SanDisk SD6PP4M-256G-1006 - 238.47 GB

HP PartSurfer name: SPS-SSD 256GB M2 PCIe MLC

I don't have any information on the compatible M.2 key types or supported length sorry.

Any help would be appreciated,

Josh

So do you still have the laptop and the Samsung 960 Pro?

Yes the 960 Pro is an NVME/PCIe type and your laptop only supports SATA type M.2 SSDs or it can support a SATA 2.5 inch SSD.

This is plainly stated in the Service Manual:

Solid-state drive Only configured with system memory up to 8 GB: ● 256 GB M.2 SATA (MLC) ● 256 GB M.2 SATA (TLC)

Can you return the 960 Pro? Post back if interested and we who have actually turned a screwdriver on a laptop can walk you through what you CAN install and how to do it. Not hard to call yourself an Expert or a Geek, but not everyone actually has the chops.

Then I recommend you call HP support for the country you live in at the link below, and verbally discuss the matter with a customer services rep.

http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

In the USA/Canada, this is the phone number...1 800-474-6836.

Stay on the line until the voice messaging system states in substance, 'if you can't connect to the internet, stay on the line to speak with a customer services representative.'
