unable to access one of 2 internal hard drives

$

This computer has 2 hard drives. One has my programs and the other has all my data.   It was working fine until yesterday.  I tried to save a file I had opened earlier in the day and got the message "D:\ is unavailable.  If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted and then try again.  If the location still can't be found it might have been moved or deleted"

When I try to access my D drive I get the same message.  This drive contains all of my pictures and personal files.  I do have an external backup drive but last backup was Mar 30.  Laptop was purchased Jan 2019 so warranty just ran out Jan 9

Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that the laptop will not start.

Do not worry. I will try to fix the issue.

Please perform the below steps and check.

Hard Reset:

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.

3) Remove the Battery. ( not for Built-in Battery computer )

4) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.

5) Plug-in the Adapter and put the Battery back into the computer if it's a (removable battery)

6) Try to turn on the computer and check, If the issue persists continue next step

If you have an external monitor or TV and check for the display.

The part description may be ASSY, RUBBER BASE ENCLOSURE. I found this description on another HP site. When I went to the HP Store it was not available.

First thing to do is to check if Windows even "sees" the drive.  To do this, open Disk Management and scroll down through the list of attached drives.  If Windows "sees" it, there will be an entry in the list.  If you see such an entry, then use the option to assign a drive letter.  When you reboot, you should again have access to the drive.

Second, if it is not in the list, then download and install the free version of MiniTool Partition Wizard and run it.  That will see all working drives attached to the PC even when Windows does not see them.  IF that does not show the drive, then it has failed.

Wish I had good news for you, but I don't.

Unlike external keyboards, the ones on laptops are not made to be rugged, but instead, to be light. Thus, if you get five years out of a laptop keyboard, you're doing very well.

Individual keys are generally not replaceable, but if the keys are not broken, then the issue is more likely with the membrane underneath the keyboard and that has to be replaced as a unit.

If you are experienced at laptop repairs, you can often replace a keyboard for $25 for a new one and a half-hours work. I have done this on older HP laptops.

But, if you're NOT, there is a serious risk of breaking fragile connectors and cables doing this -- so I do not recommend it.

Instead, I would recommend you hunting down a local laptop repair place to have THEM replace the keyboard. Should only be an hour's work or less.

Here's some troubleshooting steps you can try: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03738933

Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you would like to upgrade the M2 SSD.

Your laptop support only 256 GB.

It will not support 1TB SSD.

However, your laptop supports Dual storage configuration.

● 256 GB PCIe NVMe TLC M.2 SSD + 1 TB (7200 rpm) 9.5 mm

● 128 GB SATA Value SSD + 1 TB (7200 rpm) 9.5 mm

● 128 GB SATA Value SSD + 2 TB (5400 rpm) 9.5 mm/7.2 mm

● 128 GB PCIe NVMe TLC M.2 SSD + 1 TB (7200 rpm) 9.5 mm

● 128 GB PCIe NVMe TLC M.2 SSD + 2 TB (5400 rpm) 9.5 mm/7.2 mm

You can check the manual ( page number 2 chapter 1) as well.

(HP does not recommend upgrades as the device is equipped with parts that perform at its optimal performance and also, the upgradeable parts listed in HP articles are purely for your ease, though the decision to upgrade will be at your own discretion)

I am getting weird fan noises like they are unusually loud and choppy they were not like this when I got  It. like I could barely notice the fans before but right it is audible enough and I am afraid that if I continue to use it that way I might ruin the fan or internals  the laptop is under warranty

Will Factory Reset delete my D partition?

I have two Partition on my laptop, Drive C (Windows) and Drive D (Data). I want to reset my laptop to factory, without losing my Data drive partition (Drive D).

Does going to the settings >> Updates & Security >> Recovery >> Reset This PC >> Remove Everything will format all my drives and partitions?

As this was pre-owned (used) laptop I had purchased, so these partitions were already configured.

Battery's capacitor has reduced drastically

Hello, for about two weeks now my battery is capacity has reduced drastically almost to half of its design capacity. After running the battery test, one thing I'm worried is the negative current (-736mA).

Below is a screenshot of the test result:

New laptop small memory

We are trying to install apps etc for boys, it says the 29.1Gb has been taken up by system & reserved/ apps & features.
I bought it thinking that 30GB would be enough for what the boys need but I didn’t realise it would be taken up by the laptops “systems” etc.
Can anyone advise? I can take it back and get a different one as only got it 3 weeks ago? Are there any other options?

Re: New laptop small memory

What you are seeing is not a memory problem but a storage problem. That model comes with a 32 GB eMMC SSD which is not upgradeable. And yes the SSD can be used up pretty quickly by the operating system, drivers, apps, etc. You could buy and use a microSD card for the system and use as storage though that is not an ideal situation but is a work around. If they are gaming and using the system for schoolwork then you may want something that has more capabilities. That would mean an SSD (could be HDD but they are much slower and many new systems no longer use mechanical drives) with at least 128GB of storage and better graphics card. The system would also have a better CPU than the Stream 11.

You're very welcome.

You should be able to install a 2 TB 2.5" SSD.

The crucial report I posted lists 2 TB drives in the MX and BX series.

They are pretty expensive though.
