Re: Are HP The Top Covers w/Keyboards 934640-001 and 924353-001 the Same?

Hi,

They are probably nearly identical. I guess the 924353-001 could be slightly different because it is for notebooks with discrete graphics, so will have a different heatsink.

The one you need for your notebook is the 934640-001

This is if we are talking about the top cover. Some third party sellers sell only the keyboard (not as one piece with top cover) and most likely they can be placed (with some difficulties} in both the top covers.

M.2 SSD slot compatibility PCIe-NVMe on 15-ak112nl

Hello everybody,

I am struggling to find the correct compatibility of my M.2 slot. The socket on the motherboard seems to be a M-key type, and by running speccy to identify my hardware specifications it says I have:

Motherboard
    Manufacturer    HP
    Model    816B (U3E1)
    Version    91.1C
    Chipset Vendor    Intel
    Chipset Model    Skylake-H
    Chipset Revision    07
    Southbridge Vendor    Intel
    Southbridge Model    Skylake-H PCH
    Southbridge Revision    31
        BIOS
            Brand    Insyde
            Version    F.77
            Date    18/12/2015
        PCI Data
                Slot PCI
                    Slot Type    PCI
                    Slot Usage    Available
                    Data lanes    x1
Slot Designation    PCI Express Slot 3
                    Characteristics    PME, Hot Plug
                    Slot Number    0

Browsing through the user guides and manuals for my laptop, it only confirms the presence of an M.2 socket, but not the compatibility with PCIe-NVMe. Is it possible to use a PCIe SSD?

Second question: If I can't use an PCIe SSD, is it possible to mount a regular M.2 SATA with M+B key on my M socket?

I hope this wasn't too confusing, I am struggling for days to be sure what to purchase/avoid.

Thank you all in advance

HP ENVY Notebook - 15-ae107nl - Fan Noise - Fan Always Run

From the first day I own this notebook the fan runs constantly at full speed even if the computer is cold.

I tried everything I could find in your forums and on the internet, but the problem is not solved.

What can I do?

I ask you the courtesy not to respond with the usual response in which you refer me to the usual link where it is written to clean the air intakes, update the bios, etc ... it has already been done many times.

I have used HP for years, but this new notebook has this problem that makes it unusable, and I paid € 1,350 !!
Thank you

Some systems allow you to adjust the amount of memory reserved for video purposes with the integrated GPU in the BIOS settings, but I have no idea whether yours does. As @Huffer says, video memory allocation on iGPU systems is mostly dynamic.

The bigger problem is that your system's graphics hardware appears not to meet the minimum specifications for that game. The Railway Empire page on Steam says the minimum GPU requirements are nVidia GeForce GTX460 or AMD Radeon HD5870 (1024MB VRAM with Shader Model 5.0). Whilst they are older dedicated GPUs, they have much more graphics horsepower than your integrated GPU. videocardbenchmark.net gives the Intel HD P630 (which is the Xeon version of the Intel HD 630, so a generation up from your system) a score of 1323, whereas the minimum cards listed (which are 2012 vintage cards) have a benchmark scores of 2656 and 2617. Benchmarks cannot tell the whole story, but this suggests your system falls way short of the minimum required for this game.

In other words, your problem isn't so much lack of video RAM as lack of a GPU suitable for this sort of game.

So If I even did upgrade my system memory It wouldn't help because I can't upgrade anything else like the video memory but I can still play the game It just crashes from time to time.

The Maintenance and Service Guide for your system suggests that HP only sold these systems with SATA SSDs, not NVMe. Whilst the slot might be keyed to allow a NVMe SSD to be inserted, there is no guarantee that the PCIe capability on the slot is present and fully functional, or that there is BIOS support for booting from NVMe.

The only option guaranteed to work is to order a SSD using a HP part number on the parts list for this system. The chances are that any M.2 SATA SSD will work, though I cannot guarantee it; hopefully someone else will speak up if there are any compatibility issues. I would avoid a NVMe SSD in this system as there is no guarantee of proper operation.

If Speccy is reporting the capabilities of the slot accurately, a NVMe SSD is definitely not recommended. The usual configuration for NVMe is PCIe 3.0 x4. If there is only x1 support on the slot, the performance will be abysmal even if it works. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the slot's capabilities are not being reported accurately because there is no x4 capable device currently in the slot.

Video memory is no substitute for video power. Think of the video card as a pump. It pushes pixels through. A good video card is a powerful pump, but to keep the water flowing out of the pump with no breaks you need a reservoir to hold pixels. A powerful pump needs a big reservoir. A weak pump can only use a small reservoir. You cannot make the water come out any faster just by making the reservoir bigger. VRAM is the reservoir for the video engine pump.

Back in the '90s you could judge a video card purely by video memory. A 32 meg nVidia TNT was better than a 16 meg. Like a lot of other computer stuff, the old days have never been forgotten. A simplistic view is that the more video memory it has the better video performance you will get. Fact is there are some crummy video cards out there which have a lot of video memory they really can't use as vendors exploit these widely held misconceptions. So even if you had more video memory it would make no difference when your pump is just weak to begin with.

Yes i replaced the cd drive with a hdd.  I bought a 9mm caddy from ebay. The laptop must have a cd drive initially in order to do this. If the model is a version without the cd drive it cant  be done.

Water spilled on laptop but working perfectly fine

So earlier today I accidentally spilled a whole glass of water onto my HP 15 bs103nx and I immediately unplugged it and wiped it. I booted it up after a few minutes and tested everything and it all worked perfectly fine. Its just that I'm not sure if there will be any issues in the future. Will there be any issues?

Hard to say but not impossible. The only way to handle a spill like that is to stop using the laptop and disassemble and clean the motherboard and other connections with alcohol and let dry thoroughly before reassembly. As the water dries it can leave traces of minerals which form electricity channels and can cause current to go where it is not supposed to go. If the laptop makes it a week with no problems you can say you are out of the woods. All depends on where the water went.

Hi all,

I've bought a Kingston 240 SSD to replace hard drive already installed.

I want to keep all my files and windows 10 which was a free upgrade from Windows 8.1.

Whats the best way to do this?

I've no problem replacing the Drive, its replicating my desktop and file integrity to a blank drive that I need help with.

Cheers to anybody who can help.

Daz.

Yours is the tough one. You (maybe ) see this when you remove the back cover.

15au.jpgred circle = M.2 blue rectangle = HDD

It is SUPPOSED TO have an M.2 slot as seen in the picture but many models in that model series do not and a few even have the slot but it appears dead. No way to know without opening it up. If it can take an M.2 disk it is a 2280 SATA-3 type like the WD Blue or Samsung 860.

Your option is to install a 2.5 inch wide SATA SSD in the same shape as the hard drive. It is certain you can install such an SSD and the performance would be just as good as a SATA-3 M.2 disk.

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Internal-MZ-76E1T0B-AM/dp/B078DPCY3T/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1536854363&sr=8-3&keywords=1tb+sata+2.5+inch+ssd

Post back if you need more help and please accept as solution if its the info you needed.

Hi,

It is difficult to try and help with a question where the Member posts "I ask you the courtesy not to respond with the usual response in which you refer me to the usual link where it is written to clean the air intakes, update the bios, etc ... it has already been done many times" as I do not know what you have tried.

Anyway, have you checked that in BIOS "Fan always on" is set to disabled?

Hope it helps,
