I have seen people mill down a copper coin to the right thickness and place it where the pads are and then use thermal compound. You can take an older U.S. penny (pure copper) and easily hammer it out to the thickness you need and polish it up with an emery cloth or something similar. Copper is a wonderful heat conductor and if you happen to have a silver coin it would work even better.
