Re: Upgrade BIOS

There is a fairly new BIOS from September, 2015 which would likely be an update for you:

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp73501-74000/sp73940.exe

Download this and run it from within Windows. Don't be running any other programs. Make sure it is plugged in to AC power and has a fully charged battery. Don't expect miracles on the video. It is actually doubtful this will make a difference but the BIOS update is part of ordinary maintenance so it cannot hurt to do it. You may find that the HP software on the laptop has already performed this update and if so the BIOS program will tell you that you already have this BIOS and refuse to go further.

Here is the Service Manual:

Your Manual

The maximum memory for you IS 16 gigs. See p. 76. Memory upgrade does require extensive disassembly including motherboard removal.

There is no way to "add" a solid state drive. You would have to replace the hard drive with an SSD. Agreed, the best speed option for you is to upgrade to at least 8 gigs of RAM and replace the hard drive with an SSD but it is not easy to do.

The best battery available is a 4-cell. Adding memory will cut the battery life (maybe) but an SSD will improve battery life.

Yep, same on my 840 G2. First the little thing cracked, now it is at the stage where pieces fall off.

The moment I saw this little flappy thing, I knew this would not last.

I have not seen any difference. They share the same service manual and parts are interchangeable. The features overlap. There are M7s that have better specs than some Envy 17s. Just pay attention to what you are actually getting. Neither series uses junk hardware such as low-end processors that I have seen.

Go into device manager and find the wireless adapter, right click and choose disable. You may also be able to turn it off in the BIOS (F10 as you power up).

Re: Question about hardware driver file versions, dates and names...

Hey

I will do my absolute best to answer your questions. I understand that you are wondering what the two dates on a driver from the Notebook Driver and Software Page represents as well as if the revision date is for updates that were done to the driver, why the driver version does not change also.

You are correct!

The version numbers stay the same because the driver itself (firmware if you will), does not change. When a revision or an update is done to the driver, it is done to the original version of the driver that the engineers have prepared so the version of the driver stays the same. So they put in the date that they last did anything to enhance the original driver without changing the structure of the driver.

When structure changes are made, that's when you would see the Rev.B or a name change because the driver firmware created by a team of engineers has changed. For example:

I hope I answered your inquiries about dates and drivers.

We do have the HP Support Assistant for consumers if you are not already using it. It will update the software and drivers for you and that way it is less worry for you with specific driver numbers from the driver page. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers that need updating.

Yes the USB dongles only protrude a little bit and have their own built in antenna. The performace is close to what you would get with an internal 802.11ac card and light years better than what you have. If it were mine I would open it and count the antennae but I am about 85% certain you have a single antenna. So yes, I recommend the usb thing.

Hi

The sound doesn't work at all now, I tried to test it and it just says ''Failed to test device!''

Interesting.

Do a system restore and pick a restore point to a time before you installed that driver.  That should at least restore the audio.

The driver pages are down and I googled the model number and from what I could find, that was supposed to be the driver that is linked to that model.

Then when the support pages are working again, download and install the IDT HD audio driver listed there,

Re: How can i upgrade my laptop?

You cannot to any significant extent. The original specs say you have 3 gigs RAM with a max of 4 gigs but I believe the actual max is 8 gigs. The processor is soldered to the motherboard. Video you cannot touch as it is also soldered to the motherboard. You could install a solid state drive which would provide faster bootup and general operation but would do nothing for gaming or other video intensive operations.

Right now HP Service Manual links are down so I can't be more specific but if you have more questions post back.

Thank you very much ,
I checked your links and I am thrilled at how small the USB Wifi dongles are .
I will most likely follow your advice and have the machine opened first , before taking the USB option .

One final request / question please :

Can you please explain whether or not I would require drivers if a card replacement is possible , or is it plug and play ?

And likewise would I require drivers if I take the USB option , or is it plug and play ?

You are really sharp !
Thank you .

Hi @lucky16,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Here are some documents to help with the overheating.

Reducing Heat Inside the Laptop to Prevent Overheating

HP website for your drivers is not working today, but I found drivers for the AMD/ATI Radeon HD 7670M drivers for Windows 7 64bit.

Please keep me informed of how things went.

Re: HP Envy x360 TouchSmart Battery will not charge

I have the same problem. The battery stopped charging and even if I leave it plugged it will lose 1% charge every few days. I'm down to 6%

The system model is:

Product name:HP ENVY 15 x360 PC
Product number:G6T84UA#ABA

I ran battery diagnostics and got this:

Battery Check : Primary - Replace (42)

Failure ID: GLQ31R - 76B868 - MFPV7F - C0CR03

The computer is 1.5 years old. It is strange the battery has been damaged.

I have also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers and it did not help
