Re: How can I turn off my touchpad on my new HP laptop computer

Ok Phil.  My son has  Windows 10 on his laptop and I tried to perform the same steps.  There is a little difference and several extra steps need to be taken.  Here we go.  Click on your Window button down on the far left corner.  A small window will open and you will want to click on the Settings, One you click on the settings a new larger window will open, now click on Devices,  now another window will open, beneath devices you will then click on Mouse & Touchpad which is to the left, the window will now show details about your mouse and touchpad, you will want to scroll all the way down to related settings, right beneath that I want you to now click on "Additional mouse options", a new window called Mouse Properties will open, you will now click on the tab that says Clickpad Settings, it will look like this, capture I already have my settings saved. But you will need to click on the tab in the box that says ClickPad Disable, a small warning window will popup telling you that You are about to disable the only active Synaptics pointing device, click OK.  Now you will also want to check the little box that says, Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.  Once you have made those 2 changes you will click on Apply.  Don't forget to hit Apply.  Hopefully this will work for you.  Many have stated that once they turn their computers off they have to go through the whole process again.  I never upgraded to Windows 10 so Windows 8 saves the changes permanently.

I hope this helps you out.

What I say is very useful if you are open to receiving accurate information. If you already know the answer then it is not so useful, right? You know nothing about me. You don't know that I do not work for HP and I fought for years to get the whitelist removed. They finally did it in 2013 but I do not claim credit. I have forgotten more about the whitelist than you will ever know because it is a thing of the past now.

You also do not know that people way smarter than you have tried to crack the whitelist in HP BIOS and have failed. One guy has done it for one series of models, not yours.

eGPUs....16x PCI-e traffic crammed into a 1x channel. Great idea. USB-C and Thuderbolt 3 will change that and will make an eGPU possible but not on older hardware.

Plugged in not charging

This problem intermittently occurred when using Windows7, and continues to happen intermittently after upgrading to Windows 10.  I notice that status reads "Plugged in but not charging", with blinking white light near adapter. If I shutdown, the problem seemingly persists (blinking white light). If I simply remove and replace the battery while powered off, charging resumes and works for a while (maybe a day or two), but before long I have to repeat the process. I need to get an additional laptop for my wife, and was hoping to get another Envy 15, but she will not be able to deal with this kind of a problem. I've read a number of other posts on this problem, but not seeing a definite solution.

mothballing laptop

Okay, I have a 4 year old HP desktop, it works fine.  Since desktops appear to be going the way of VHS tapes i have been looking at laptops lately.  A new store opened near me and there was a huge grand opening sale,  The flyer had an HP laptop for $250, only 5 available.  I camped out for 6 hours with many others and i got my laptop!  I had seen the exact same model on sale at Office Depot for $500.

Now to  my issue.  I want to continue using me desktop until it dies or crashes.  I set up my laptop and verified that everything was working.  How can I "mothball" the laptop?

Should I drain the battery and put it away until I need it?

Shoud I have the battery fully charged when i put it away?

Should I plan on charging and using the laptop every few months?

What is best for the life of the battry and the laptop?

Thanks!!!

Hi:

Please read this HP support document for how to store the battery...

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00596784

I would use the notebook from time to time.

There is a second battery called a CMOS or Real Time Clock (RTC) battery that maintains the time, date and other BIOS settings.

If you remove the main battery for too long of a time, the CMOS battery will wear down quicker and will need to be replaced.

On a desktop PC, that is easy enough to do.

On a notebook PC it could be a real daunting task.

I should also mention that this is not my first wireless mouse (the previous one having been from Logitech), the computer is not a new one, and I have had no difficulty with P-n-P for devices from other manufacturers in the past.

The only positive I've got is that my suggested workaround seems to be working.  I found a small USB 2.0 drive and installed a number of apps from the store to it, it's not ejected once yet in the last 4 or 5 days I've been testing the idea.

It's not the Sandisk one I linked to, just a small old drive, it's too bulky to keep but as a proof of concept, it's worked out better than the MicroSD which has dismounted several times over the last few days.

So I'm going to order the Sandisk or any other that fits as flush as possible to the tablet, I only want it for installing apps so 32GB or so will be fine.

Hi,

I have an HP Envy 17 J137cl, and the graphics card is going bad. I have had the computer for a little more than a year so there is no warranty on it anymore. I want to just replace the motherboard with one that perhap has a better graphics card, as I play a lot of games. Could someone give me a list of motherboards compatible with my laptops setup? Thanks!

Hello ,

Thank you for the reply!

With the switchable graphics you have listed, it appears you have 1024mb of discrete memory. Looking at the graphics configurations on pages 3-4. Using that information in accordance with the fan information on page 83, the part you are look for is: 665308-001.

You can use that part number with the HP Parts Surfer and other computer part sales websites.

Does the HP Pavilion dx6697us have SATA drives? Should DBAN de able to securely wipe it?  I am hoping to upgrade to a newer model and would like to make sure it's securely erased before I bring it to a recycling center.

Hi:

Yes it does have a sata drive, and there is no 100% foolproof way to make sure no one can ever access data on a hard drive.

However dban does as good a job as possible.

If you really want to be secure, then remove the drive and put a sledgehammer to it several times.

That is the only way to really make sure no one can try to access any data that was on the hard drive previously.

Just be kind and put the hard drive caddy and screws inside the drive bay, so that all the next person needs is the bare hard drive.

You will find a lot of used PC's for sale on eBay don't come with hard drives, because of the previous owner's or business's fears of a data breach.

Re: WiFi problem

Hey ,

I understand you are having you're having some trouble connecting your notebook to WiFi and I would like to help.

Here is a list of steps that commonly resolve issues with wireless connectivity.

First, we have a step by step guide to walk you through the troubleshooting process here:
Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection

A second option, is to try these steps:
Power cycle the network:
1. Shut down your notebook.
2. Unplug the power to your router.
3. Unplug the power to your modem.
4. Wait at least 45 seconds.
5. Plug in the modem, and wait for it to come back online.
6. Plug in the router, and wait for it to come back online.
7. Turn on your notebook, and test your connection.

Disable the Power Off option for the adapter:
1. Open Device Manager. (Win Key+R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)
2. Expand the Network adapters.
3. Right click on the Ethernet/Wireless Adapter and click Properties.
4. Click the Power Management tab.
5. Remove the check mark beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
6. Click OK.
7. Test.

Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:
1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.
2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.
3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.
4. Restart your PC and test.

Reinstall the network adapter drivers:
1. Download the drivers from here but do not run them yet.
2. Go to your start screen/menu and type Device Manager.
3. Expand Network adapters.
4. Right click on the wireless adapter and choose Uninstall.
5. Run the downloaded drivers from step 1.
6. Restart your PC and test.

Test an Ethernet connection:
Self explanatory. Test if the issue persists on a wired connection to rule out the wireless adapter hardware so troubleshooting can be directed towards the right areas.

Test another connection:
Many people rule out their home network as an issue if another device is working on the same network. Networking is not that simple. Each device interacts differently with your router or modem and it is impossible to rule out settings in that device until the notebook has been tested on another network.

If those three steps do not resolve the issue, try this document published by Microsoft for networking issues: Wired and wireless network problems. You can change the operating system with the drop-down in the upper-right corner of the document.

The above steps are brought to you by @Great-Deku-Tree

Hope this helps. If it does, please hit the Thumbs Up and Accept as Solution.

Cheers,

TechSurge.
